Biography

Daphne Chemutai Kiplagat is a first-year PhD international student from Ndalat, Kenya currently specializing in short fiction and nonfiction writing. Her creative work attempts to rethink identity and inclusion through a wider engagement of different forms of knowledge, and has appeared in Alien Magazine. The tension surrounding being a non-immigrant in the United States feeds most of her work.

Specifically, Chemutai deploys fiction and nonfiction to defamiliarize Eurocentric perspectives of Africa by providing an alternative foundation for rethinking these notions of exclusion and victimization. The interaction of oral storytelling techniques and written narratives found in her creative works allows for a complex retelling of the history of Africa and its people in the diaspora.
