As generative AI tools become increasingly integrated into research, teaching, and professional practice, the University of Rhode Island Graduate School has published two new resources to help faculty, staff, and graduate students navigate AI use responsibly and transparently.

The Responsible Use of Generative AI in Graduate Education guidance document provides a framework for thoughtful AI use in graduate research and scholarship. The guidance emphasizes academic integrity, independent thinking, transparency, and ongoing communication between students, faculty mentors, and committee members. It is designed to support informed decision-making while recognizing that AI expectations may vary across disciplines and research settings.
In addition, the Graduate School has developed a Thesis and Dissertation AI Usage Agreement, an optional planning tool that enables graduate students, major professors, and committee members to discuss and document expectations for AI use throughout the research process. The agreement includes the URI CYPHER AI Usage Marking System and can help establish shared understanding and clear communication around AI-assisted work.
