Dr. Futas was Director of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies (GSLIS) from January 1986 until her untimely death in February 1995. An energetic and intelligent dedication to socially responsible library services informed her many interests; she worked, researched and taught in the areas of women’s studies, reference and adult services, collection development, professional growth and ethics, social issues and cultural diversity. Dr. Futas was a transforming presence in the School and in a field she described as “the last of the noble professions.” She was a winner of the Beta Phi Mu Award, and is also memorialized by the American Library’s “Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award.”
This memorial Scholarship was established by her family and GSLIS faculty, alumni and friends to recognize students in the GSLIS program who show excellence in their academic work, strong potential in library leadership, and a commitment to professional development, ethics, and service, in the spirit of Dr. Futas. The award will be made each semester in the form of a tuition benefit of approximately $2000.
To apply for the Futas Memorial Scholarship, a GSLIS student in good standing should submit to the Admissions and Awards Committee by February 15 (October 15th for the Fall 2013 semester) a packet including:
- a cover letter, nominating yourself for the award and highlighting your special qualifications for it;
- a completed application form and essay;
- your resume and program of study; and
- a statement of financial need.
Applications will be evaluated for evidence of professional activity and responsibility; academic excellence; commitment to Dr. Futas’s principles, ideals, and general interest, as expressed in the application essay; and financial need. Announcement of the award will be made at the GSLIS Annual Gathering.
