Katy Wilkey ’28

Rhode Island native and film/media student Katy Wilkey ’28 has found a strong sense of community at URI. She has made the most of her first year by joining the Dance Club, attending campus events, and taking classes outside her major. Through these experiences, Katy has developed friendships and a deeper connection to the campus, student life, and her love for her major.

What is your major?
Film/media

What brought you to URI?
I definitely wanted to go somewhere in Rhode Island since I love it here, and it’s where I’ve lived my whole life. It was important to me to pick a college with a good film program and a nice campus! So, of course, URI was perfect.

What are some things you wish you knew?
Before starting college, I wish I knew just how much I’d have to improve my organizational skills and planning. Taking notes for every class and writing down any readings, projects, or homework as soon as they are assigned has made the biggest difference for me.

What was your favorite memory/class?
Some of my favorite memories from my first semester at URI were taking and teaching classes with URI’s dance club. Being a commuter student at URI, I was worried I’d feel disconnected from my community and from the college experience. Joining Club Dance, I found a group of people who shared my passion for dance and choreography, and I had something to look forward to every week!

What’s one piece of advice you would give to an incoming freshman?
One piece of advice I’d give to an incoming freshman is to try everything! Definitely look into the clubs, sports, and events on campus, but also take classes outside of your major and your gen eds. You may find a new interest you never thought you’d have, or discover a new career path that excites you.

What are you most looking forward to in future semesters?I am most looking forward to networking and making more connections to others in the film community. I’m eager to have new experiences and to start preparing for my future!
