Mildew – A surface fungus that looks white, gray, or yellow and feels powdery. Found on damp walls, fabrics, or paper.
Mold – A deeper fungus that looks black, green, or fuzzy and can spread fast. Found on walls, ceilings, carpets, and damp areas.
How Do Mold & Mildew Develop?
Both love moisture and thrive in warm, humid environments! They grow when there’s:
🔹 Excess moisture (from leaks, condensation, or humidity)
🔹 Poor ventilation (trapped humid air)
🔹 Damp materials (wet clothes, towels, or spills left uncleaned)
How to Prevent Mold & Mildew in Your Room!
Daily Habits:
- Run a fan to keep air moving
- Wipe up spills immediately to prevent moisture buildup
- Hang wet towels & laundry—don’t pile them on the floor!
- During warmer months: Keep windows shut in AC buildings!
Weekly Habits:
- Clean surfaces with mild detergent or disinfectant
- Check for leaks under sinks & near windows—report them ASAP!
- Empty your trash regularly to avoid moisture buildup
Monthly Habits:
- Wash bedding & curtains to prevent mold spores from settling
- Look for condensation on windows or walls—if you see it, dry the area!
- Keep furniture an inch away from walls to allow airflow
If You Spot Mold or Mildew:
Don’t try to clean large mold areas yourself! If you see mold on walls, ceilings, or AC vents:
Report it through your MyHousing account ASAP so maintenance can address it.
For small mildew spots, clean with a mix of vinegar & water or a mild cleaner.
Keeping your space dry and ventilated is the best way to stay mold-free!
