Meet Emily Erskine

Emily is a senior in HDF!

What year and program are you in?

Senior, double major in Elementary Education and HDF.

Where are you from?

Burrillville, RI

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, friends, and my dog, Remi.

What activities/groups/research are you involved in on campus?

Resident Assistant in Adams Hall, one of the College of Health Science LLC buildings, Writing Tutor for HDF, and Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (EDC 312)

Do you have any career goals?

My career goals are rooted in helping children grow, feel successful, and take pride in their learning. I view teaching as more than just academics — it is also about nurturing a sense of confidence, curiosity, and resilience in every student. My background in HDF has been vital in shaping this perspective, helping me understand the children’s unique needs and the importance of building strong relationships with them.

What do you like about your program?

I love how my program has a wide range of courses and allows you to really dive deep into your interests with the concentrations within the major. I also experienced two vastly different practicum placements as a part of my HDF major, which allowed me to gain experience and pick up on techniques/methods I would not have learned without this major. Additionally, the professors are just amazing and are a highlight of the department for sure.

Please provide some words of wisdom for students.

Especially for first-year students — get involved on campus! Whether it is with a club/organization, going to group exercise classes, attending programs in the residence halls, or working an on-campus job, getting involved is a great way to meet friends, build a sense of community, and find a home here at URI.
