Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s (ABM)

The Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDF) of URI offers an Accelerated Bachelor’s to Master’s (ABM) program. This program provides students with the opportunity to complete a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in HDF within one year after completion of their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Specifically, during their senior year, nine credits of undergraduate level courses (400-level courses) will be counted towards students’ undergraduate degree and their master’s degree. After graduating with their B.S. degree, students will be coded as an M.S. student in HDF and can then complete the remaining courses to attain their M.S. degree in one additional year. During their final year, students will be completing graduate coursework in addition to a capstone project.
Students who graduate with an M.S. degree in HDF will gain more in-depth education and training in family science and the stages of human development. Such education provides skills for students to work for organizations designed to improve the well-being of families (e.g., non-profit organizations, state agencies).
Applicants for the HDF ABM program must meet the following requirements:

  • Earned a minimum of 75 credits towards their HDF or a related field Bachelor’s degree.
  • Have a minimum of 90 credits upon beginning the HDF ABM program.
  • Completion of a research methods course.
  • A current GPA of a 3.5 or higher.
  • One letter of recommendation.
  • A resume.
  • A personal statement detailing why the applicant has chosen to apply to the HDF ABM program and how this program will support the applicant’s career development.
Enrollment in the HDF ABM program will take place only after the Graduate School admission requirements have been met along with completion of 90 undergraduate credits. Upon admission, students will meet with the Program Director to design a program of study that will serve as a map towards their completion of their M.S. in HDF. Click here to apply.
*Note: GRE scores are not required for admission to this program.
