A Vision of Yemen: the Travels of a European Orientalist and His Native Guide (Stanford University Press, 2019), deals with the travels of a French professor and his guide who traveled through Yemen in 1870. The journey was unique because, very unusually, the guide not only provided one of the few witnesses we have of the small-town life in rural Yemen, but he also reflected on his mixed experiences of working for this European.
