Hilda Lloréns, of URI’s Department of Anthropology was awarded the 2022 Gregory Bateson Book Prize from the Society for Cultural Anthropology. The prize honors significant, ethnographically rich, and beautifully written books that address the urgent issues of our time and the field of anthropology.

Lloréns’ book, Making Livable Worlds: Afro-Puerto Rican Women Building Environmental Justice was published by U. Washington Press in November 2021 and looks at the powerful modes of resistance exhibited by the Afro-Puerto Rican women following the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and María in September 2017. Autobiography, ethnography, fieldwork, research, memories, and research are intertwined to recast Black Puerto Rican women as agents of social change.

Lloréns won a Humanities Subvention Grant from the Center for the Humanities in Fall 2020 to help support in-part this research.
