Dr. James Haile will be giving a Brown Bag talk on, “Why Black Philosophy Needs Afrosurrealism and Black Speculative Fiction” on Wednesday, September 18th at 1pm in the Hoffman Room of Swan Hall. Haile will be arguing that the aesthetics of Afrosurrealism is the vehicle through which Black speculative fiction navigates and animates subjectivity and freedom borrowed largely from Euro Modern liberal tradition.

This talk uses works from W.E.B. Du Bois, Frederick Douglass, James Baldwin, Saidiya Hartman, Boots Riley, and Lena Waithe. In preparation for Haile’s talk, please join us for a screening of Boots Riley’s 2018 film, Sorry to Bother You, on Friday, September 13th at 3pm in the Hoffman Room of Swan Hall.
