Unseeing Empire: Photography, Representation, South Asian America

March 16th, 2021 @ 4:30 pm

Dr. Bakirathi Mani, Professor of English at Swarthmore College, will be discussing her new book, Unseeing Empire. Mani’s work explores how photography is central to cultural and social ties that bind the diaspora to South Asia as well as how historical documentation shape our contemporary engagements with ourselves. URI’s Professor of Art, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, is featured in a chapter of Mani’s book and will be part of the event. The presentation and following discussion will be moderated by URI’s Art Historian, Dr. Kathy Quick.
