“Critical Edition of El escondido y la tapada by Calderón de la Barca”

Iñaki Pérez-Ibáñez’s project presents a new critical edition of El escondido y la tapada by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, to be published in the prestigious Comedias completas series by Iberoamericana-Vervuert. Based on extensive philological research and comparison of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century printings, the edition establishes a reliable text accompanied by a scholarly introduction and detailed annotations. These materials clarify linguistic, cultural, and historical references while situating the play within Calderón’s broader oeuvre, the conventions of the cloak-and-dagger genre, and its performance history. The edition is designed to serve both specialists and students, as well as theater practitioners interested in staging early modern drama.

By recovering and reexamining a lesser-known work by one of the central figures of the Spanish Golden Age, this project contributes to the preservation and dissemination of early modern cultural heritage. The play’s nuanced exploration of gender, honor, and social identity—particularly its portrayal of a woman navigating and subverting social constraints—offers insight into enduring human concerns. In doing so, the edition fosters dialogue between early modern texts and contemporary debates in the humanities, advancing broader goals of accessibility, interpretation, and cross-cultural understanding.
