Iñaki Pérez-Ibáñez’s research project focuses on the analysis of a legal dispute involving a theatrical company managed by Francisco de la Calle and his wife, Jerónima Coronel, one of the earliest documented female theater company owners in Spain. Pérez-Ibáñez will travel to Pamplona, Spain, to study a newly discovered seventeenth-century court ruling (Archivo General de Navarra, signature ES/NA/AGN/F036/164769). The ruling details the company’s failure to fulfill a performance contract with the city of Bilbao during a bubonic plague outbreak, addressing contested wages, contractual penalties, and expenses related to the construction of a temporary playhouse. By completing a close study of this case, the project will shed light on the connections between gender, financial risk, and theatrical practice in Spain’s Golden Age.
