Biography:

Originally from Rhode Island (circa 1977). Graduated with B.A. in Fine Art from the University of Rhode Island in 1999. Current Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts Candidate (Winter 2019 Graduation) at Vermont College of Fine Arts, Montpelier, VT. Kevin spent over a decade exploring the landscapes of Jackson, Wyoming, Portland, Oregon, Puglia, Italy, and Brooklyn, New York (in that order…). He has worked and exhibited in each of these locations, letting the sense of place inform his work. After starting a family in the bustling metropolis of New York City, Kevin returned to his native state… as Rhode Islanders often do. He lives and works close to the sea with his wife, two children and his dog in South Kingstown.

Teaching Philosophy:

As I wrap up my first year of graduate school, I have developed further my critical thinking about art and honed my teaching skills. I believe teaching is about learning techniques and building on prior experience. Because everyone is on a different path, individual attention is necessary for a positive workshop experience. My goal is not to teach “my” way of painting, but to guide participants along their own road of experience. My creative process has been built upon intuition. By using the same principles of creation for teaching, students walk away with confidence with their own accomplishments in the class or workshop.

Ian Mohon

Born in Texas and spending a short time in the NAVY, Ian Mohon finished his BFA and has spent the last 15 years working within New England’s finest art galleries. A painter, photographer, and printmaker, his recent work has re-focused on his painting with an emphasis on portraiture both of architecture and people. Now living in Providence, Rhode Island with his wife and daughter he splits his time between family, restoration projects for the Armenian Historical Association of Rhode Island, preparatory specialist for multiple galleries, and creating and managing work within his own studio.

His current series focuses on iconic buildings in Providence and the surrounding neighborhoods. Beginning with a fractured jumble of images, he selects only those that will provide a broken but truthful representation of the building itself and the personality of the neighborhood. The buildings are imagined from various angles, broken and shifted, with colors both heightened and blown out. This technique gives the works a sense of wonder and confusion as walls move and colors fade; and analogous wonder the city holds with its faded colors slowly resurfacing as Providence re-builds.
