SHELTERED brings to life the lesser-known history of the Italian partisans during World War II (WWII) who sheltered escaped Indian prisoners of war at the risk of their own lives. Through lens-based media, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew illuminates this inspiring history by creating images constructed from projecting family photographs of Italian families and Indian soldiers on the walls and streets of these towns and homes in Abruzzo, Italy. Thus, animating the site of this lost history brings it into the present and acknowledges those who fought against fascism and looked past differences in race and language to give refuge in wartime Italy.
