Ph.D. Student – 2 positions available

The integrated circuits design lab (ICDL) at the University of Rhode Island (URI), Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering (ECBE), is seeking 2 graduate research assistants (Ph.D.) in the field of analog, digital, and mixed-signal integrated circuits. The candidate is expected to be involved in all aspects of this research including modeling, simulation, circuits design, layout, tapeout, characterization board development, and chip characterization.

Our research lab is located in The Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering, one of the most technologically advanced facilities in the United States, featuring flexible spaces for interdisciplinary collaboration, and equipment essential for forward-looking research. Kingston lies in close proximity to popular tourist destinations, like Narragansett, Boston, and New York, yet still retains its small-town feel.

Full financial support is provided, including tuition, stipend, and benefits. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The position has a required start date of Spring 2027 or Fall 2027.

Project: Integrated circuits design

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in electrical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience with Cadence IC design tools (Spectre, Virtuoso, PVS, etc.).
  • Experience with RTL scripts (Verilog HDL).
  • Experience with MATLAB scripts for chip design and data processing.
  • Experience with Mentor Calibre tools.
  • Experience with PCB design tools, including Altium or Allegro.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills as well as a strong work ethic.

Note:

  • If your ultimate degree objective is a Ph.D., you must apply directly to the doctoral program. Our lab does not admit students with a B.S. into a terminal master’s program.

The candidate is expected to be involved in all aspects of this research including modeling, simulation, circuits design, layout, tapeout, characterization board development, chip characterization, and detector fabrication.

  • B.S. or M.S. in electrical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Experience with Cadence IC design tools (Spectre, Virtuoso, PVS, etc.).
  • Experience with RTL scripts (Verilog HDL).
  • Experience with MATLAB scripts for chip design and data processing.
  • Experience with Mentor Calibre tools.
  • Experience with PCB design tools, including Altium or Allegro.
  • Experience with semiconductor sensor or detector fabrication in a nanofabrication facility.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills as well as a strong work ethic.

  • Priority consideration will be given to candidates with hands-on experience in sensor or detector fabrication in a nanofabrication (nanofab) facility.
  • For candidates with substantial nanofabrication experience, prior integrated circuit (IC) design experience is not required.

MS Student

Undergraduate

The integrated circuits design lab (ICDL) at the University of Rhode Island (URI), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), is seeking a part-time (up to 10 hours per week) undergraduate research assistant. The candidate is expected to be involved in designing, fabricating, and testing Printed Circuit Boards.

Qualifications:

  • MUST be a current ECE junior or senior at URI. (No double major)
  • Already took ELE 201, ELE 202, ELE 212, ELE 215, ELE 220 for ECE students.
  • MUST take or already took ELE 322, ELE 338, ELE 339, ELE 343, ELE 344.
  • Priority will be given to a student who has PCB experience.
