10 Quick Tips & Tricks to Campus Rec

I hope everyone is settling into the school year well! We’re a few weeks in now and I’m sure everyone is in their groove.

Have you ever had questions while at the gym? Or difficulties signing up for a group exercise class? If you haven’t made your way to the gym yet this semester or even if you’ve been going every day, below I have 10 (QUICK) tips for you concerning everything Campus Recreation that I promise are worth the read!

Here we go!

1.) Don’t forget to swipe

The first thing you need to do when you walk into the gym is hand the front desk attendant your student ID card, if you’re at Mackal field house you present your card to the attendant at the desk when you enter the track NOT the Rec service center when you walk in.

2.) Commuting? Rent a locker!

Locker rentals are available at both Anna Fascitelli and Mackal, locker rentals are $5/month but they fill up fast! So make sure you purchase a rental soon. Having a locker rental is nice if you live off campus and want somewhere to store your gym bag and towel during the day.

3.) Don’t sweat it, bring a towel!

Both gyms provide towels as a courtesy but that does not always ensure that there will be one. So if you’re like me and always work up a sweat while working out I would suggest getting your own towel to bring (I got mine from Marshalls!)

4.) Don’t be shy, sometimes we all ask for help

Fitwell attendants are the people behind the desks inside the gym in the Keaney blue shirts. They are there to spot you on heavy lifts, teach you proper technique, show you how to use the equipment and suggest exercises. If you find yourself in need for a little bit of help they are a great resource, and they’re very friendly!

Fascitelli is such an amazing gym, but it can get really busy. If you find yourself wanting to work out during peak times and you can’t get on the squat rack there head down to Mackal!

Mackal has a cardio room and a weight room with multiple squat racks. My favorite thing about Mackal is the basketball courts! You can rent a ball with your student ID and play with your friends!

6.) Channel your inner track star

All the treadmills are being used? No problem! Mackal field house has its own indoor track for you to use. The hours for the track are the same as the rest of the facility (6am-11pm during the week). So channel your inner track star and get to running!

7.) Swim some laps! Or….. jump off the high dive!

Down in Tootell is the pool! There are three pools, a lap pool, a diving well, and a heated instructional pool. The lap pool is a great place to go swimming some laps to get some cardio in. Swimming is a great aerobic exercise that is easy on your joints! If you’re not much of a swimmer (like myself) it is also really fun to jump off the diving boards. The community and adult swim times are posted on campus rec’s website.

Intramurals are a fun way to get together with a group of friends and play sports! The sports played vary from session to session including volleyball, basketball, soccer, and flag football!
Intramurals are fun and can get competitive, make sure you look on the campus rec website for everything you need to know about registration. ALSO, intramural champions get awesome t-shirts!

9.) Get moving with a group!

Group exercise classes are great for so many different reasons. There is no better feeling than crushing a cycle class with a group of people who are all striving to meet the same goal.

Campus rec offers a wide arrangement of classes including yoga, cycle, Zumba, body pump and so many more. Group exercise classes are tailored to all skill levels from beginner to expert and are held in both Anna Fascitelli and Tootell.

Make sure you download the IMleagues app so you can sign up for classes! I recommend signing up ahead of time because a lot of the classes fill up fast. Registration for classes opens up at 12 noon the day before. When signing up for IMleagues make sure to use your uri.edu email and choose The University of Rhode Island as your institution.
