Intramurals: The best workout on campus?

Flag football players lined upIf you’re reading this and you haven’t yet tried Campus Recreation Intramural Sports what are you doing!?

As a current sophomore kinesiology major, of course, I believe that being active is one of the most important things to us as young adults. Sure, working out at the gym is important for our health but doing the same repetitive exercises can get boring. So, do you want to stay active and have fun at the same time? Yes? Then intramural sports are for you!

Intramurals are something that I look forward to every week. I can hardly hold in my excitement in before games.

The campus recreation team offers a variety of sports throughout the academic year ranging from flag football to corn hole and everything in between.

There is a sport for everyone.

5 things you NEED to know

1.) Where?
All intramurals are all held on campus usually either in Mackal field house if it’s indoor or down by flag road parking (when the weather gets a little warmer) if it’s outdoor. Sand volleyball is held on the courts behind the resident halls.Sand volleyball player

2.) When?
Most games are during weekdays anytime between 6 – 11 pm or Sundays 2-9pm. I will say I have had a game at 12:30 am and getting up the next morning was tough. It’s understandable if you don’t want to go to late games at night, especially if you have an 8 am the next morning, but there are always games you can make!

3.) Why?
Even if it’s just once a week intramurals can keep you from an entire day spent at the library by forcing you to get out and be active. Most importantly taking part in intramurals is great for your mental health. Yes, studying is important, it’s why you’re at college I get it, but that mental break is vital if you want to stay sane during a stressful week of work.

4.) How?
Sessions of sports will start either the very beginning of the semester or halfway through the semester, there are two sessions each semester. Follow URI Campus Rec on URI’s website, Facebook, Instagram etc. for easy information – at least that’s how I get my info! Alternatively, you can visit the campus rec office in Mackal field house and enquire in person, don’t worry they’re very friendly people.

You can also sign up on imleagues.com and create an account with your school email ending in @my.uri.edu. There is usually helpful information on IMleagues if you have any questions.

5.) What if I want to play but I don’t know anyone else?
soccer teamEven if you don’t know anyone to form a team or play with you can still sign up as a free agent on imleagues.com/uri. As long as you sign up and register as a free agent, this means that other teams can see that you’re available to play for them and invite you to join their team.

The best thing about intramurals, in my opinion, is the variety in skill level. Take it from me, I’m an avid soccer fan who takes indoor futsal as serious as finals week but then when I play volleyball I flap around like a headless chicken. My point being is intramurals has those who are new to sports as well as those who play often and will challenge you, and if you’re thinking it’s too easy just wait until playoffs when everything is put on the line for the coveted champions shirt – personally I have four, think you can beat that?

This is your chance to try something new, to challenge your own skill set, sure you may be able to dunk from the free throw line but can you execute the perfect cornhole game?

The second session of intramurals registration ends on Tuesday 26th of March, at 7pm – so get registering!

Bye for now!
