Intellectual Wellness

We are one month into Flourish Fridays, and today Campus Recreation would like to focus on sharing the Intellectual Wellness pillar of wellness. And don’t forget, on April 12, from 11-2 p.m. on the quad, students are encouraged to attend Flourish Fest which is an opportunity for the URI community to learn about different organizations that are directed to each of the pillars of wellness.

What is Intellectual Wellness?

Intellectual Wellness encourages and inspires individuals to enhance and expand their skills, as well as their knowledge. This can be achieved by attending professional development seminars, getting involved with the community, or joining clubs!

How to Improve Your Intellectual Wellness at URI?

Here at URI, there are many opportunities to grow your intellectual wellness. With numerous clubs, organizations, and professional development events- we have an abundance of resources to help students and the community further develop their knowledge.

Getting involved with student organizations across campus is a great way to meet new people and expand your network. At Flourish Fest, organizations like Protect our Breast, Student Organization Leadership Consultants, University College of Academic Success, CELS Seeds of Success, Center for Student Leadership Development, Multicultural Student Services Center, Office of International Programs, and URI Gender and Sexuality Center will all be present. Each of these departments aims to assist students in enriching their learning about intellectual wellness. By joining these clubs and organizations, students can expand their intellectual wellness by speaking to others, staying curious about how to grow knowledge, and by learning new skills.

For more information on how to join a club or to see which organizations we have on campus, check out the URI Student Group page here

On campus, there are also opportunities to participate in career and experiential events. On the URI Careers webpage, which can be found here, there is a calendar of events for the upcoming weeks filled with panel discussions, seminars, career expo events, and so much more. This is a great resource for students to improve their networking skills as well and to take advantage of all of the professional opportunities offered on campus!

Additional Ways to Increase Intellectual Wellness

While our campus offers students resources to improve their wellness, there are many other ways to enhance wellness off campus.

  • Find a new hobby: By investing yourself in learning a new hobby, you can increase many of your intellectual skills like attention to detail, creative skills, problem-solving, and memory. Learning a new skill or investing your time into important practices like how to perform CPR, which is offered here at Campus Recreation in a Basic Skills course, can help you grow and maintain your intellectual wellness by putting this knowledge to the test.
  • Listen to a podcast: As podcasts are continuously on the rise, there are many podcasts that aim to improve one’s well-being. Some of the most popular podcasts for college students, and some of my personal favorites, are Ted Talks Daily, Stuff You Should Know, The Students’ Podcast, and Radiolab. Each of these podcasts aims to provide listeners with updates on information about what is going on in the world or provides answers to investigative journalism. By listening to podcasts and educational sessions, you are fueling your brain with useful information to direct you to refine your overall wellness.
  • Eat “brain food”: In an article posted by Harvard Medical School, the school suggests fueling your body with leafy vegetables, berries, fatty fish, and nuts to provide your brain with the appropriate nutrients. By doing this, you are powering your brain to focus and learn more!

Each pillar of wellness is fundamental to protecting and fueling your well-being. Here at Campus Recreation, we focus on being active, being well, and belonging to the community. Join us on April 12th to learn more about the pillars of wellness and the different initiatives you can take to better your daily lifestyle!
