Fall Into Campus Rec

There’s a shift in the air, the days are slowly getting shorter, and syllabus week is in the near future. Campus is about to wake up, and fall is approaching. There is no better time to start planning how you’ll fall into everything Campus Rec has to offer. Whether you’re a returning student getting ready to get back into the semester routine, or a first-year mapping out campus before you move in, Campus Rec is your home base for staying active, meeting people, or taking a break from the books. Here’s what’s coming your way this season.

Summer schedules are unpredictable, the new semester is the perfect reset button. The Anna Fascitelli Fitness & Wellness Center will be open extended hours during the first few weeks of the semester. From weight rooms and cardio equipment to quieter offerings like meditation and the labyrinth there is something for everyone to explore. Mark your calendars and plan to swing by between classes. Whether you’re squeezing in a workout before your first lecture or unwinding after a long day of listening to your syllabi, the space will be ready for you. Group fitness is one of the best ways to build a routine that actually sticks, because you’ve got a set time, a set place, and a room full of people who make working out more comfortable. This fall’s lineup includes Pilates, Bodypump, Yoga, Cycling, and so much more, with options for every energy level and schedule. Whether you’re chasing a calm, centered start to your day or a heart-pumping way to blow off steam between classes, there’s a class for you. For the full schedule, to sign up, and to learn more about each class, head to IMLeagues.

Nothing says “fall on campus” quite like flag football under the lights or an evening volleyball match with your friends. Intramural sign-ups will open September 8th, with leagues for nearly every sport and skill level, competitive, recreational, and co-ed divisions all included. Grab your roommates, your floor, your club, or your study group and turn them into a team. Beyond the games themselves, intramurals build in a kind of built-in community. The same group of people showing up week after week, cheering each other on, and grabbing food together after a win or loss. It’s an easy way to turn a handful of familiar faces into a friend group.

If sports aren’t your thing, fall weather is the best time of the year to be outdoors, and campus is at its most beautiful when the leaves start to turn. Cooler temperatures, crisp air, and golden afternoons make it the perfect season for a walk, bike ride, or stroll around campus between classes. You don’t need to plan, a group, or any gear to take advantage of it. Grab a friend, throw on a flannel. And use the ten minutes between classes to actually look up from your phone. If you’re looking for a quiet spot to reset, drop by the labyrinth outside Fascitelli, walk it slowly, and let it be your ten minute reset between classes.

College can feel big and scary, especially early in the semester. I remember my first year at URI feeling anxious about who I’d hang out with and how I’d even meet people in the first place. Campus Rec is one of the easiest ways to shrink that feeling down. Showing up to the same fitness class every week, playing on an intramural team, or just running into familiar faces at the gym turns a huge unfamiliar campus into something that feels a lot more like home. You just need to show up once, and the rest tends to follow. Be sure to check our socials @uricampusrec to stay updated!
