A Vision for the Saugatucket
Fall 2016
This project focused on developing sustainable solutions for the Saugatucket River and Main Street in Wakefield, RI. Working with the Town, senior LAR students analyzed community needs and existing conditions along the river and Main Street; facilitated a public workshop and held a design charrette. This led the class to develop four thematic master plans emphasizing different approaches for restoring and protecting the corridor.
Designs included an ecological restoration with native plants and new park spaces; a teaching/learning landscape with a riverside boardwalk and outdoor classrooms; a village plan focusing on culture, history and sustainability, and a green pockets theme with rain gardens, bioswales, stormwater collection areas, bike lanes and a new park/amphitheater to accommodate flood conditions. There were also river crossings, a sculpture park and new links to Main Street. The students presented their work at a public meeting at Town Hall in South Kingstown.
