Spring 2022 Job Readiness Series

As part of the RI C-AIM and the Career Development Program, Metcalf Institute hosted three sessions in the Spring of 2022 to introduce participants to foundational components of job readiness. These short sessions offered a springboard for deeper explorations of the topics, and count toward completion of the Career Development Program Certificate.

 

Part 3: Fundamentals of Science Communication
April 14, 2022
12:00-1:30 p.m. Eastern
Attendance satisfies a CDP Certificate requirement credit.
This session, led by Dr. Sunshine Menezes, URI clinical associate professor of environmental communication and executive director of Metcalf Institute, outlined the foundations of strategic and inclusive science communication and provided a framework for guiding communication about STEM topics. While participants were encouraged to attend the full 1.5-hour program, they were allowed to attend the first hour for full credit. The final 30 minutes of this program was an interactive exercise.

Attendees at this seminar prepared for this essential career skill. Presentations by Lisa Kuosmanen, URI Center for Career and Experiential Education, Cara Mitnick, URI Graduate School, and Peg Lamere, Toray Plastics, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. with continued discussion from 1:00 to 1:30. Co-hosted by URI Center for Career and Experiential Education, URI Graduate School, Metcalf Institute, RI C-AIM, and Employer Partners.

Part 2: Essentials of Leadership in STEM
April 6, 2022
12:00-1:00 p.m. Eastern
Attendance satisfies a CDP Certificate elective credit.
Our presenter for this session, Dr. Tolani Olagundoye, is a clinical assistant professor at URI who teaches courses and provides resources and experimential learning opportunities to undergraduates and youth through URI Cooperative Extension and 4-H Youth Development. At this workshop, Dr. Olagundoye facilitated discussion about how identity and morality relate to leadership in the STEM workplace.
