Master of Music in Music Education
Program Requirements
A minimum of 30 credits is required for graduation.
M.M. in Music Education requires:
- MUS 540 Foundations of Music Education (3)
- MUS 545 Music Learning, Evaluation and Assessment (3)
- MUS 547 Literature Review in Music (2)
- MUS 548 Research in Music
- MUS 505 Teaching Music in Higher Education, MUS 506 Music Administration and Supervision, or MUS 541 Exceptional Learners in Music (3)
- 6 credits of graduate music history or music theory (6)
- 4 credits of graduate music education (MUS) or graduate education (EDC) courses (4)
- Thesis option
- Minimum of 24 credits and;
- 6 credits in MUS 599 Master’s Thesis Research
- Results in report of original research contributing to the music education field
- Non-thesis option
- Minimum of 24 credits and;
- 6 credits of MUS 570 Graduate Project or 3 credits MUS 570 and 3 credits MUS 599
- Results in written field experience project, curriculum, or paper reporting an in-depth investigation of a music education project.
Oral defense of thesis and non-thesis projects required. Students should submit their thesis or field experience project proposal to their advisor the semester prior to graduation.
Thesis/projects should be completed by November 1st for fall graduation and April 1st for spring graduation. Edits must be completed by the last day of classes; Oral presentations are scheduled during finals week.
Music education candidates must pass a written comprehensive examination in music history, theory, and music education after 15 or more graduate credits have been completed. A minimum of 30 credits is required for graduation.
