Biography
In July 2022, Hanna recorded an album of trombone duets by Vladislav Blazhevich for the European Gramophone label with trombone legend Christian Lindberg and Kelton Koch of the Vienna Philharmonic. The recording is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more than 200 streaming platforms worldwide. Hanna also maintains an active career as a New England freelance musician and has regularly performed as a guest with ensembles including the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops.As a soloist, Hanna has received several international and national awards, including First Prize in the International Trombone Association’s Larry Wiehe Trombone Competition and First Prize in the Lätzsch Trombone Competition, where he later appeared as a guest recitalist in 2014. He has performed David Maslanka’s Trombone Concerto with the University of Texas at Arlington Wind Symphony and Johan de Meij’s *T-Bone Concerto* with the Amsterdam Symphonic Winds as part of the 2016 International Trombone Week. He also premiered Thomas Trachsel’s *Festival Anthem for Trombones and Orchestra* with the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra.
As an orchestral musician, Hanna has appeared as a guest trombonist with numerous European and American orchestras and ensembles, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Albany Symphony, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hague Philharmonic, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, New Trombone Collective, New World Symphony, and Dortmund Philharmonic. He was selected as a finalist for the Minnesota Orchestra’s Rosemary and David Good Fellowship in both 2018 and 2019, a program created to spotlight musicians from traditionally underrepresented communities. He has performed under conductors including John Williams, Charles Dutoit, Andris Nelsons, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Thomas Adès.
Hanna studied with Jörgen van Rijen, Principal Trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra; Pierre Volders; Remko de Jager; Ben van Dijk of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra; Dennis Bubert, Bass Trombonist of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra; and Toby Oft, Principal Trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and additional studies with Alex Illes, James Markey, Steve Lange, Michael Mulcahy, and Colin Williams among others. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2015 and his Master of Music in Trombone Performance from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2017. He is currently completing the Doctor of Musical Arts in Trombone Performance at Boston University as a recipient of the prestigious Elouise Cobell Scholarship.
Hanna was an Orchestra Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center in association with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was also selected for a fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival and School and was personally selected by Christian Lindberg to participate in the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Masterclass Series in Lübeck, Germany.
