Caring for Chronic Pain: How to Approach Treatment of Chronic Lower Back Pain in the Primary Care Setting

Overview

The goal of this educational activity is to discuss the appropriate assessment and management of patients with chronic lower back pain based on available data and guidelines. Reviewing appropriate therapies will hopefully reduce the use of ineffective and/or potentially harmful treatments and help to promote positive patient outcomes.

Target Audience

Pharmacists in all practice settings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity learners will be able to:

  • Differentiate between acute and chronic pain
  • Describe appropriate assessment of patients with chronic lower back pain
  • Review first-line therapies for treatment of chronic lower back pain including pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment modalities
  • Identify therapies that have not shown benefit for the treatment of chronic lower back pain
  • Discuss choice of therapy based on patient specific factors

Evaluation

All participants will have the opportunity to review the educational sessions and speakers and to identify future educational needs.

Whiteny is originally from Southern Maine and graduated from University of Rhode Island School of Pharmacy in May of 2023. Whitney is currently completing her PGY-1 residency year at Coastal Medical. She is primarily interested in ambulatory care and hopes to pursue a career in ambulatory care following the completion of her residency in July.
