Overview

The goal of this study is to understand the role of hormonal signaling and summarize the underlying causes of infertility as well as identify medications used in their treatment.

Pharmacists in all practice settings.

Learning Objectives

  •  Identify steps in the pregnancy pathway 
  • Distinguish the phases of the menstrual cycle and the role of hormonal signaling  
  • Summarize the underlying causes of infertility and identify medications used in their treatment 
  • Explain how to determine the optimal timing of medication administration for patient-specific infertility protocols and review important counseling points for fertility medications. 

Evaluation

All participants will have the opportunity to review the educational sessions and speakers and to identify future educational needs.

Emma Camara, PharmD, BCPS is currently a clinical pharmacist at The Miriam Hospital. While on rotation with the Care New England (CNE) Specialty Pharmacy, Emma observed numerous prescriptions for medically assisted reproduction. With only minimal knowledge of the subject area, Emma embarked on a journey to understand not only the medications used in the treatment of infertility but the underlying pathophysiology as well. With mentors from both Women and Infants and CNE pharmacy, this CE presentation entitled, “Restoring Hope: A Pharmacist’s Overview of the Pathophysiology and Treatment of Infertility” seeks to educate patient-facing pharmacists of their crucial role in a patient’s fertility journey. Emma’s professional areas of interest include both ambulatory care and medication safety.
