How to Complete the PATH Portfolio on Handshake:
Your portfolio will be how the HPAC committee gets to know you and your readiness for the health profession you are applying for.
Below is a written step-by-step process of completing your portfolio as a requirement of participating in PATH. For those that prefer to learn by a video tutorial, that is provided in the button below:
Portfolio steps video tutorial1. Completing your profile in Handshake
To begin, you’ll need to login to Handshake.
- Sign in using your URI single sign on (SSO) username and password
- For alumni, you’ll need to update your login information to be your personal email address.
- When logging into Handshake, navigate to the top right corner of the page and click the circle where your initials or picture are.
- Select “my profile”
Complete each section of your profile, including:
A photo: consider adding a photo of yourself here that is professional in nature. While it’s not required as a part of the PATH process, you will need to upload one when completing your health professional application in the future.
Summary – an overview of who you are, what you’ve done and your goals
Skills – add about 10 skills here of what you are best at. We suggest considering adding the core competencies of the profession you are applying to. Examples would include the 15 core competencies for medical school, published by the AAMC that include critical thinking, and more.
Work experience – add all of your experiences here. Complete the organization name, your title, and the dates you completed the experience.
Include here:
- Clinical or patient care experience
- Volunteer work or other leadership in the community
- Research experience
- Shadowing
- Other work experience
- Do not include your on campus involvement here, this will go in a separate section
In the description, give:
3-4 sentences overview of what this was/is.
For example: URI 101 Mentors are undergraduate students that co-moderate the first year introductory course for a group of 25 students. The course is dedicated to provide guidance on how to navigate their college experience. In this role I would meet with the course instructor once a week to review the content for the lesson plan and be creative in ways to deliver the content, and facilitate the content each week in class.
3-4 sentences on why this was impactful for you.
For example: This opportunity provided me with leadership skills by creating lesson plans and activities to deliver the course content in a meaningful way. I had the chance to meet one-on-one with 15 students mid-way through the semester, giving them guidance on selecting their courses and giving them advice on how to navigate issues, like roommate conflict. From this experience I was able to have a deeper meaning for caring for patients by understanding that they want the space to be heard first and listened to.
Education – this is usually already populated for you, but you do want to ensure your GPA is listed in this section
- Click the pencil to edit
- Our office tries will calculate your science BCPM GPA for you, but if it’s not here, type this into “Department GPA”
- If your cumulative GPA is not listed, include that here as well
Courses – list all courses that you’ve taken here at URI or other institutions (not high school)
- You can add multiple courses at once by selecting the “+” sign in the top right corner
Organizations – include any on campus involvement you have here, including student organizations or clubs
- If you held a leadership role, ensure you indicate that in the title
- Provide a description of your involvement
Projects – include anything you’d like to highlight here. Examples could include published research or group projects that you were a part of
Languages – include any languages that you speak, outside of English
2. Adding Documents to Your Handshake Profile
- Navigate back to the top right corner of the page
- Select “My Documents”
Upload the following documents here:
- URI unofficial transcripts – request these through eCampus
- Your resume or CV – use the resources from the Center for Career and Experiential Education (CCEE) before uploading your resume or CV
- Personal Statement – all applicants should have attended a Personal Statement Writing workshop. For feedback or to get started on your personal statement, make an appointment with URI’s Writing Center before uploading it
Please select “Public” so the HPAC committee can review your portfolio.
3. Completing an Applicant Readiness and Reflection Form
In addition to completing your Handshake profile, you’ll also complete an Applicant Readiness and Reflection form, formatted as a Microsoft form.
The form will take about 60 minutes to complete and will ask questions about your readiness to apply to health professional programs. Take the time to respond to these questions the same way you would in any other professional writing piece, and should be used as a way to self-reflect on your readiness for your health professional program.
Your answers will be reviewed as a part of the PATH process by the HPAC Committee.
