Biography

A native of Costa Rica, Luis Viquez (DMA 2017, University of Missouri-Kansas City), is a Latin Grammy-nominated artist that joins URI as the new Director of Orchestral Studies. Formerly a tenured faculty at the University of South Dakota, he has led orchestras across the USA, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, and England. Additionally, he is an accomplished clarinetist and serves as an artist for the brands Royal Global and D’ Addario Woodwinds. Dr. Viquez has published academic work on instrumental music pedagogy and Latin American music, both in English and Spanish. He serves as the National Vice President of the College Orchestra Directors Association.
