Biography

Doug Kievit is a Lecturer at the University of Rhode Island, where he teaches courses in Social Psychology, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Evolutionary Psychology, and Research Methods. He joined the URI faculty after receiving his PhD in Social Psychology from Florida State University, where he also taught a variety of psychology courses as an Instructor of Record and Visiting Assistant Professor. Doug is recently engaged to a fellow social psychologist, with whom he likes exploring his new New England home. He is also a big fan of corgis, college football (Go Vols and Go Noles!), and Grateful Dead cover bands.

Research

As a graduate student, Doug conducted research on racial prejudice and political polarization, paying special attention to the motivational underpinnings of political violence. As a teaching professor at FSU and now URI, he strives to demonstrate the value of studying psychology not only for students’ professional development but also for better understanding ourselves and others. Across all his classes, he emphasizes active and experiential learning through live demonstrations, interactive activities, and applied, hands-on projects, adapting these approaches to classrooms ranging from 10 to 300 students.
