Biography

NOTE: Dr. Stamates will be accepting new graduate students for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Dr. Stamates is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Faculty Core of the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program at the University of Rhode Island. She joined the department in 2019 after earning her Ph.D. in Applied Experimental Psychology at Old Dominion University. At URI, Dr. Stamates directs the HARP Lab, which uses various methodological approaches (e.g., experimental designs, ecological momentary assessment) to (1) understand how alcohol-related consequences develop and persist among young adults (i.e., ages 18 to 25) and (2) identify populations (e.g., sexual minority women, nonstudents, students with ADHD) that are at heightened alcohol-related risk, with the goal of contributing to prevention and intervention efforts. Dr. Stamates has a particular interest in impulsivity and socio-cognitive variables, such as expectancies and drinking motives, that contribute to alcohol use and associated consequences among young adults. She is currently funded on a Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01AA029399-01) to examine longitudinal mechanisms of alcohol-related risk for college students with ADHD.
