Dr. Molly Richard, assistant professor of public health at the University of Rhode Island, recently released new estimates on doubled-up homelessness in Rhode Island. Using U.S. Census Bureau data, the research highlights the scale of this often hidden form of homelessness, how rates vary across the state, and its connections to housing affordability, public health, and homelessness policy. Based on these data, an estimated average of nearly 6,000 individuals experienced doubled-up homelessness in Rhode Island during the 2020–2024 period, while the most recent data suggest the number may be increasing.
