Dr. Sabik and Dr. Nash complete ATL Summer Institute Workshop

This June, Dr. Natalie Sabik and Dr. Caitlin Nash both completed the ATL Summer Institute Workshop: (Re)Discovering a Culture of Care at URI.  The workshop emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of care within higher education through intentional support systems, shared responsibility for well-being, and access to mental health resources. A central component was the Mental Health First Aid training, which provided practical tools for recognizing signs of distress, responding appropriately, and connecting individuals with available support. Discussions highlighted the value of promoting open communication, respecting boundaries, reducing stigma around help-seeking, and addressing organizational factors that contribute to stress and burnout. The workshop also showcased campus resources and support networks that can strengthen individual and community well-being.

Another major focus of the workshop was trauma-informed approaches to teaching and learning. Presentations and collaborative discussions explored strategies for creating classroom environments that prioritize trust, inclusion, flexibility, and student well-being while maintaining academic rigor. Dr.’s Sabik and Nash had the opportunity to examine ways to incorporate trauma-informed principles into course design, assignments, policies, and interactions with students. The workshop underscored how everyday practices of empathy, active listening, and relationship-building contribute to a more supportive educational environment and demonstrated how trauma-informed teaching can serve as a foundation for a broader culture of care across departments and institutions.
