URI scientists to deploy Narragansett Bay Observatory for monitoring health of changing bay

Oceanographers, engineers and other marine scientists from the University of Rhode Island, in partnership with researchers from seven other institutions in the state, are preparing to deploy an array of instruments in Narragansett Bay as part of a new effort to monitor and predict the Bay’s health in the face of environmental changes.

URI engineering students win Award of Excellence, regional Silver Award in computer engineering competition

University of Rhode Island graduates Daniel Williams, of North Smithfield, James Kiessling, of East Providence, Christian D’Ovidio of Cranston won the Award of Excellence in the Global Grand Final Competition at the 2018 Innovate FPGA (field-programmable gate array) Global Design Contest. The team also won the contest’s Silver Award in Americas regional award.

New analysis reveals ocean trawling’s global footprint smaller than earlier estimates

A new analysis of ocean regions around the world shows that bottom trawling, which accounts for a quarter of the world’s seafood harvest and can negatively affect marine ecosystems, occurs on just 14 percent of the seafloor along continental shelves and slopes. These findings indicate that the footprint often had been overestimated significantly.
