Biography
Jason M. Dahl is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Dahl (PhD, Ocean Engineering, MIT; B.S., Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Webb Institute) is an expert in fluid-structure interactions and floating body dynamics, with particular expertise in the flow-induced vibration of structures. Dr. Dahl has extensive experience as an experimentalist with scale model tank operations, dynamic testing, and quantitative flow visualization. Dr. Dahl conducts research on the integration of physical measurements with simulation, including the fundamental development of digital twin technologies, wave forecasting from floating systems, control of floating offshore wind turbines, vortex-induced vibrations, and bio-inspired engineered systems. Dr. Dahl is the lead of the Marine Hydrodynamics research area for the National Institute for Underwater Vehicle Technology (NIUVT), leading a variety of projects focused on advancing technology and workforce development in undersea naval applications. Dr. Dahl leads the NSF funded planning effort to establish a URI site for an NSF Industry-University Collaborative Research Center called the Center for Ocean System Simulation and Control, focused on fundamental research on digital twin technology applied to engineered structures in the ocean. Dr. Dahl regularly helps with small and large companies interested in utilizing the URI wave and tow tank facilities for prototype testing and validation.
