Sleep Disorders in Older Adults

Changes in sleep patterns are a normal part of aging, but can contribute to sleep disorders and disturbances in older adult patients.  Health professionals should be knowledgeable about epidemiology and the mechanisms that underlie sleep disturbances and prevent probable inappropriate hypnotic use.

  1. Describe the epidemiology of sleep disturbances
  2. Discuss mechanisms that underlie sleep disturbances
  3. Review management of sleep disturbances, including hypnotic use
