Dr. K Gus Kousoulas is Head of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences and Professor of Virology and Biotechnology at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. He is the Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded (INBRE) Louisiana Center for Biomedical Research (LBRN), and he currently serves as the President of the National Association of IDeA Principal Investigators (NAIPI). Dr. Kousoulas has served as the LSU Associate Vice President for Research and Economic development, emphasizing STEM research and development efforts overseeing research centers and institutes. He has served as the Principal Investigator of the COBRE LSU-Tulane Center for Experimental Infectious Diseases. Dr. Kousoulas currently serves in the scientific review committees of the COBRE- CTR Louisiana Clinical & Translational Science Center (LACaTS) and as a member of the Administrative Core and director of the Molecular and Cell Biology Cores of two COBRE Centers, the Lung Biology and the Animal Models of Cancer. Dr. Kousoulas has served on four external advisory committees of COBRE Centers in MS, AR, NE, and KS. He is the Chair of the National Scientific Advisory Boards of two national primate research centers, the Southwest National Primate Research Center and the Tulane National Primate Research Center. Dr. Kousoulas’ research interests focus on the molecular biology of human herpes viruses, HSV-1 that causes facial and genital infections, and Kaposi’s Sarcoma Associated Herpesvirus (KSHV) causes cancer in humans. His teaching expertise and research interests are in molecular and cellular biology, virology, genetics, cancer biology, immunology, and nanomedicine.
