Dr. Mark Nelson is University Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont (UVM). His work has been supported mainly by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and the American Heart Association. Dr. Nelson has lectured and published widely, and has research interests in the properties and roles of ion channels in vascular and smooth-muscle function. He has sparked major advances in ion channel physiology and calcium signaling in the vasculature and neurovascular coupling. Among myriad accolades, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Nelson has trained over 50 postdoctoral fellows, with more than 30 currently being faculty members at major Universities in the USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan and Europe. He is a Board Director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UVM and Co-Director of the Vermont Center for Cardiovascular and Brain Health, UVM’s new Center of Biomedical Research Excellence.
