WHY: Part of a program to expose economically-disadvantaged high school students to college-level science experiences

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Twenty-four students from Central Falls and Woonsocket high schools head to the Bryant campus on Friday, May 6, for some hands-on experimentation in the University’s science labs.

Their trip, sponsored by Bryant University’s Science and Technology Department and R.I. EPSCoR, is part of an initiative to expose economically disadvantaged high school students to college-level science experiences.

The students – participants in the R.I. Educational Talent Search program – will create a microbial fuel cell, learn about bacteria and how a fuel cell works, will collect and analyze data, and will discus what water sources provide the best microbial community for generating electricity.

STUDENTS’ ITINERARY

Arrive: 10 a.m.

Hands-on science lab: 10:30-12:30

Lunch: 12:30-1:15

Admission talk/discussion with current science majors: 1:30-2

Campus tour: 2-2:30

Depart: 2:45
