Roger Williams University will host the 7th New England Science Public-Biology New England South (NESP-BioNES), Friday, Dec. 6, 2013.
The NESP-BioNES has grown significantly since its inception, from a single sponsor in 2004 (the first unofficial meeting) to nine partner institutions in 2013.
This year’s sponsors are: Roger Williams University, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, Brown University, Bryant University, Providence College, University of Rhode Island, Salve Regina University, Rhode Island College, and the Sea Education Association.
Professor Virginia Edgcomb, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, will be the featured keynote speaker. She will discuss the diversity and evolution of protists, and their distribution and community structure, particularly in marine micro-oxic and anoxic/sulfidic environments.
Faculty members are encouraged to discuss ongoing research programs in a 10-minute oral presentation. The principal investigator should introduce the theoretical and scientific approach of the research program, its academic and scientific relevance and possible practical applications. Faculty presentations will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Deadline for abstract submission is 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22.
Graduate and undergraduate students conducting original research and sponsored by a principal investigator are encouraged to participate in the NESP-BioNES Graduate Student or NESP-BioNES Undergraduate Student Awards (5-minute oral presentations). These are highly competitive, prestigious awards, which include certificate and monetary compensation.
The student competition, NESP-BioNES Graduate/Undergraduate Student 2013 Awards, will take place from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
A poster session open to all participants will run from 3:30-5 p.m. Graduate and undergraduate students and faculty are encouraged to submit abstracts for poster presentations. Awards will be given to significant graduate and undergraduate student contributions, and certificates will be issued to awarded authors.
