Bachelor of Arts in Sociology
Curriculum
Students in the Bachelor of Arts curriculum are required to complete a minimum of 30 credits in sociology.
Required Courses
Majors must take the following five courses (15 credits):
- SOC 290 Bridge to the Sociology Major: This course reinforces academic skills and approaches needed in upper-level courses and introduces major and career options (note: students who started prior to Fall 2024 are required to take SOC 100 instead of SOC 290)
- SOC 395 History of Sociological Thought: This course provides students with some sense of the relationship between sociological discourse and other intellectual developments in both non-Western and Western societies (formerly SOC 401)
- SOC 301 Sociological Research Methods: This course is a sustained examination of sociological research techniques with an emphasis on critical reasoning and the evaluation of sociological research (formerly SOC 440)
- SOC 360 Quantitative Methods in Sociology: This course builds on the material learned in SOC 301 and further develops statistics and data analysis skills. (formerly SOC 460)
- SOC 495 Capstone in Sociology: As a capstone course, the senior seminar focuses on a single topic to give students an in-depth appreciation of how sociologists examine the world and how sociological analysis can shed light on contemporary problems
