Minor in Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx Studies

Overview

A new minor in Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx* Studies (LAX) is now available for students who wish to have a comprehensive understanding of social issues in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as issues affecting Latinx and Caribbean-American communities in the U.S.

This interdisciplinary minor requires a total of 18 credits across multiple departments and programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, offering students a chance to understand the diverse people, cultures, economies, and politics of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the diversity of Latinx and Caribbean-American communities in the U.S.

In 2018, the population of Latinas/Latinos/Latinxs in the U.S. reached 18%. At nearly 60 million people, this group is now the second largest ethnic/racial group in the U.S.

* The term “Latinx” is increasingly used instead of “Latinas/Latinos.” The “x” disrupts the gender binary and signifies the inclusion of transgender and gender non-conforming identities.
