The Risk Management Office is an integral part of the University of Rhode Island. By promoting a culture of compliance and shared responsibility, the mission of the RMO is to manage and protect the University community; its human, physical, natural, and financial assets, and to minimize losses and legal liabilities.
Our vision is to strive to improve and raise awareness of risk management. To provide the necessary services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors by identifying, evaluation, and investigating risks of loss. Covers medical costs arising from accidental injuries to enrolled camp participants and camp visitors.
Coverage Amount: $10,000 per camper / per injury
Excess coverage for intercollegiate athletes’. Coverage is in excess of student’s primary health care coverage.
Coverage Amount: $90,000 per athlete / per injury.
Automobile liability insurance provides coverage to the University and its authorized drivers for damage to property and bodily injury to others. Physical damage insurance covers damage to URI owned vehicles and lawn mowers.
- Any accident involving a URI owned vehicle must be reported to the appropriate police authority and to URI Department and link to the form.
Covers defense costs and payment of claims resulting from wrongful acts which may have caused damages that the University is legally obligated to pay. Claims may arise from organizational errors and omissions, trustee and officer liability, employment practices, negligent instruction, failure to grant due process, copyright infringement, idea misappropriation or other actions.
Coverage Amount: $4 Million aggregate coverage with a $150,000 retention per claim.
Covers all liability exposures for University staff who are licensed architects and engineers. Also provides coverage to Engineering students while participating in experiential programs.
Coverage Amount: $1 Million / $10,000 deductible
Coverage includes property owned by, or loaned to, the University with an established appraised value. Covered property includes (but is not limited to) museum collections, jewelry, precious metals, paintings, rare books, sculptures, rare coins and antiques. Property must be scheduled (reported to the insurance carrier in advance) for coverage to apply. Coverage amount is based on value of art work.
Included in the General Liability Policy and provides General Liability coverage to students, faculty and staff while working or studying in foreign countries. Coverage includes defense costs and payment of claims resulting from injuries to persons or damage to property of others that arise from URI students, faculty and staff while conducting study, research, employment or any other URI sponsored events in Foreign Countries. (Only URI authorized travel assignments)
Coverage Amount: $1 Million per occurrence/ $3 Million Aggregate Limit / $25,000 deductible.

Covers defense costs and payment of claims resulting from injuries to persons or damage to property of others that arise from URI operations for claims that occur in the U.S and foreign countries. This coverage includes the following entities:

Coverage Amount: $1 Million per occurrence / $3 Mil Aggregate Limit / $25,000 deductible.
Excess Limits: $25 Million per occurrence
Inland Marine coverage is for URI owned property valued at $10,000 or over and if damaged would to be a hardship on the department to replace. All URI Property is covered under the Property Insurance policy with a $100,000 deductible. The Inland Marine Policy allows the scheduling of expensive equipment or property to be covered with a lower deductible generally between $500 to $1,000, making it more affordable for the department to replace the item. Property and equipment eligible for this coverage must be owned and tagged by the University or contractually obligated to be insured by the University (generally leased, loaned or rented property). Inland Marine coverage is not automatic coverage and it is the department’s responsibility to contact the Risk Management Department to request coverage for eligible property or equipment. In the event of a loss, the department must work with the Risk Management Department to make a claim under this policy.

International travel insurance provides medical insurance and evacuation coverage for University members traveling outside the United States and coverage to international guests coming to study or work at the University. The coverage is comprehensive and mandatory for all University members traveling internationally. To enroll please click on the link below. Policy provides coverage for Hull & Machinery (damage to owned vessels) and Protection & Indemnity (bodily injury & property damage to others).Hull & Machine covers physical damage to all vessels listed on policy, includes equipment such as motors, outboards and trailers. Hull & Indemnity covers bodily injuries and property damage to others as passengers or as a result of the negligence of a covered vessel.
Also provides coverage for named oceanographic equipment owned by URI to include buoys, Doppler’s, dive equipment and research equipment specifically listed on the policy. The policy covers URI marine property, while on land and anywhere while afloat on inland and coastal waters.
Marine coverage is not automatic coverage and it is the department’s responsibility to contact the Risk Management Department to request coverage for any water vessel or equipment. In the event of a loss, the department must report the loss and work with the Risk Management to make a claim under this policy.
Coverage & Deductible Amounts: Based on value of property and equipment
Covers defense costs and payment of claims for injuries arising from the rendering or failure to render healthcare services by a medical professional employed by the University. (All staff physicians’ at URI Health Services also carry an independent Medical Malpractice Coverage)
Coverage Amount: $2 Million per occurrence / $6 Million aggregate
Covers university buildings and contents for physical loss or damage as a result of a sudden and accidental occurrence. Property covered is subject to a $100,000 deductible per occurrence. The following types of property damage are excluded from the policy: normal wear & tear, damage from insects or vermin, pollution and mold/fungus.
In order to be covered, property losses must be promptly reported to Risk Management Department. Once the loss report is received, Risk Management will report the loss to the insurance carrier for claim handling. ** Please keep documents & photos of all damaged property. Please retain all repair and service invoices and forward to Risk Management. If damage property is a total loss please advise the Property Department.
