Program Overview

As a Chinese Flagship Program student you will complete majors in Chinese and the major of your choice. Flagship students are pursuing degrees in everything from textile marketing to psychology, and from biomedical engineering to economics. You will develop advanced discipline-specific Chinese skills and cross-cultural savviness through your preparation at URI and real-world work experience in China. In an increasingly competitive global economy, employers tell us that these are skills are a must and often result in higher salaries. Our graduates are prime candidates for graduate programs in engineering, medicine, law, education, and public policy. We have strong ties with global companies through our partners in the International Engineering Program and International Business Program. Government agencies such as the CIA, NSA, and Department of State actively recruit Flagship students and offer incentive pay to those with high-level language skills. The Department of Defense also offers scholarships for students who simultaneously complete the Flagship program with ROTC. For more information on Flagship ROTC Scholarships, contact URI Army ROTC.

The Language Flagship

The Language Flagship is a national effort to change the way Americans learn languages.  Flagship offers language programs at schools across the United States for undergraduate students in critical languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu.  Designed as a network of programs, The Language Flagship seeks to graduate students who will take their place among the next generation of global professionals, commanding a superior level of proficiency in one of many languages critical to U.S. competitiveness and security.

Flagship Certified Professionals are highly motivated graduates who possess:

  • Professional-level language proficiency in their Flagship language of choice;
