Language at a higher standard
The URI Chinese Language Flagship Program
The Chinese Flagship Program at URI is one of only 12 such programs in the United States designed for students in any major to achieve a professional level of proficiency in Chinese, which is one of the most in-demand languages in business, government, and education.
If you’re a really motivated student, and you’ve got your sights set on a career related to China and the Chinese-speaking community, the URI Chinese Language Flagship Program can help you reach your goals. In this five-year program, you’ll earn a bachelor’s degree in your chosen academic discipline while working to achieve superior language proficiency and a B.A. in Mandarin Chinese.
You’ll also join a prestigious group of students at a small number of universities across the country who are committed to the highest standard of language learning. You will have multiple opportunities to study the language intensively both domestically and abroad in preparation for your Capstone Year, a year of study and internship in China. Our program is designed to meet the needs of all students, from absolute beginners, to heritage speakers.

As a Chinese Flagship Program student you will complete majors in Chinese and the major of your choice. Flagship students are pursuing degrees in everything from textile marketing to psychology, and from biomedical engineering to economics. You will develop advanced discipline-specific Chinese skills and cross-cultural savviness through your preparation at URI and real-world work experience in China. In an increasingly competitive global economy, employers tell us that these are skills are a must and often result in higher salaries. Our graduates are prime candidates for graduate programs in engineering, medicine, law, education, and public policy. We have strong ties with global companies through our partners in the International Engineering Program and International Business Program. Government agencies such as the CIA, NSA, and Department of State actively recruit Flagship students and offer incentive pay to those with high-level language skills. The Department of Defense also offers scholarships for students who simultaneously complete the Flagship program with ROTC. For more information on Flagship ROTC Scholarships, contact URI Army ROTC.
