The English Graduate Program at the University of Rhode Island offers professional training in a variety of related specializations including literary research, theory, and criticism and the teaching of literature and writing.

Degree and Certificate Programs

Master of Arts

The English Master of Arts is as an advanced degree in which students are encouraged to discover new ways of thinking and to broaden and enhance their readings in and understanding of a wide range of literatures. Students in pursuit of the English M.A. may choose from one of three different paths of study:

  • Non-Thesis Option
  • Thesis Option
  • MA in English and MLIS Cooperative Program

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

As a student in the English Ph.D. program, you will choose your own concentration from within a core curriculum designed with an eye toward your overall professional development.

Available concentrations include:

  • American Literature and Culture
  • British Literature and Culture
  • Critical Theories
  • Gender Studies
  • Film
  • Creative Writing (we are the only program in New England that offers a Ph.D. with a creative dissertation)
