MA in Hispanic Studies Requirements

Successfully completing the MA in Hispanic Studies

As a Spanish Master’s student, you will be able to choose four thematic areas of study: from Spanish Applied Linguistics, to Castilian Literature through the 15th, 19th, or 21st centuries, to Latin American Literature through Independence or beginning with Modernismo. You will have the following options to complete your program: 1) Take (10) courses, and sit the MA Comprehensive Examination, or (2) Take eight (8) courses, write a traditional thesis, and sit the MA Comprehensive Examination
While it may be true that one can find Spanish Master’s programs at numerous schools, URI is the only public school with a Spanish master’s program in the state of Rhode Island, and we make sure that our students receive a holistic Spanish education that is about much more than language acquisition. Our diverse Spanish faculty brings their personal knowledge and experiences in Spain, Latin America, Mexico, and the Virgin Islands to their work at URI, but they also want to know you personally, and to give you the kind of individualized attention that will ensure that you develop the expertise you need in your particular areas of interest and career goals. As a MA student in our program you will not only grow academically, but professionally as well.

Your coursework can be completed at our scenic, rural Kingston campus in Rhode Island, through our summer study program in Salamanca, Spain, or a combination of both. From the rolling farmlands and surrounding forests to the ocean and coastal watershed, we enjoy natural resources that inspire our students and faculty to do their very best work. Tree-lined, quiet, and quintessentially New England, our main campus is located in the beautiful, historic, rural town of Kingston, just 30 miles south of Providence and close enough to New York and Boston for easy collaboration with fellow experts and internships in any discipline. And, our picturesque setting is perfectly located just minutes away from Rhode Island’s beautiful beaches. Our very reputable URI Summer In Salamanca provides students with a breadth of cultural and language exposure that makes them for formidable students of language, literature, and culture.
