Raising the Bar in Language Education

Our award-winning faculty are pioneering effective new techniques to help you reach a high level of proficiency.

In the classroom and beyond, we promote a culture of immersion to help you feel comfortable in another language. And when you’re ready to study abroad, we’ll help you feel prepared.

Signature International Programs

Our interdisciplinary and dual-degree programs offer the opportunity to gain a high level of proficiency in another language as you gain international experience in your chosen field.

URI Signature Programs

Global Language and Area Studies

The Global Language and Area Studies B.A., with tracks in Classical Studies or Japanese, is designed to allow you to emphasize either language learning or area studies knowledge.

Critical Languages

The U.S. government designates languages that are important to national security and economic prosperity, where the need for professionals exceeds number proficient users, as ‘critical languages’.

URI students who study languages such as Chinese, Japanese, or Portuguese benefit from special government programs and scholarships set up to expand the number of Americans who reach proficiency.

The Language Learning Resource Center

The Language Center is a perfect place to practice your foreign language. We have moveable tables, chairs, beanbags, and white boards to accommodate groups of different sizes. We encourage out-loud speaking practice but also offer a limited number of study rooms for quiet study and tutoring sessions.

We offer a variety of items for checkout, including:
headphones with microphones for working with tutors online
tablets with access to online language learning resources
foreign language films and books provided by URI language programs

Language Center space can also be reserved for events and club activities at select times. We LOVE hosting film nights, game nights, and other types of activities. Please contact us through for more information on reservations.

The Language Center is located in Swan Hall Room 301.
