Freshmen considering the music composition track at URI should submit a portfolio of original compositions to the Music Department office no later than February 1 prior to their year of enrollment.
The portfolio should consist of 3 scores of original compositions (no arrangements please), accompanied by at least one audio recording of one of the pieces submitted. The other two pieces may be a synthetic/midi version if no audio recording is available.
The compositions should display:
1. Diverse styles
2. Diverse instrumentation (for instance: solo, vocal, chamber ensemble, electronics)
3. An abundant variety of rhythms, tempos, and meters
4. Harmonic inventiveness
5. Motivic inventiveness
6. A variety of textures (such as counterpoint, homophony, or call and response)
7. Attention to scoring details (dynamics, tempos, articulations, tonguing, bowings)
