This year’s Rhode Island 8th Grade Gandhi Essay Contest yielded 161 essay submissions from schools all over the state. The Gandhi quote that students responded to was, “If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children.”
We have been so impressed with the way young people are thinking and writing about peace and nonviolence. The committee is in the process of selecting the top essays and will present the awards on Gandhi’s assassination date – April 30, 2015 in the URI Multicultural Center Forum. This is always a wonderful, uplifting event, as we all celebrate not only the philosophy of this great man, but the experiences that the 8th grade students had in researching, reflecting, and writing about Gandhi.
