27 URI Students Complete Nonviolence Training with Direct Action Projects

PSY478 Special Topic: Kingian Nonviolence Conflict Reconciliation training course, taught by Prof. Paul Bueno de Mesquita, ended the semester with presentations from groups on their nonviolence direct action projects, ranging from body cams and armed security officers on campus, to responding to self-harm, reducing textbook prices, ending sexual assault, to eliminating gun violence.

Following the Six Steps of Nonviolence, a methodology for social change laid out by Dr. King in his Letter from Birmingham Jail, students put their training into action demonstrating how much they’ve learned about conflict, reconciliation, Kingian nonviolence principles. Many reported transformative experiences as a result of completing this experiential training course.
